Steven had his 5 year old check up today at the doctor's office. He was such a brave little guy. He knew he would be getting his shots....in his words, "I'm taking my shots today." He was scared, but walked in with his head held high. Every time he heard someone behind the door in the waiting room, he jumped. I could feel how scared he was just by looking in his eyes and hearing his voice. When we finally went back, he had to get weighed, measured, take a basic eye exam and take a hearing test. When we went in for the pee in the cup test, he couldn't do it, so we had to wait for later.
The nurse came in and broke the news that he had to get his finger pricked for a blood test. He wasn't excited about it, but made it through with just a few tears. When the doctor came in, he wouldn't talk to her; I knew it was because he was scared of the shots that were coming. He made it throgh the exam just fine and when the doctor left and we were waiting for the nurse, the tears started flowing........
......He screamed for the first two shots, but the real scream came with the last shot, the mmr vaccine. My heart broke. It really hurt him and as a mom, the hardest thing to see is one of your children in pain. I cried for him. I couldn't help it.
I told Steven that he wouldn't have to come back for shots until he was twelve years old, seven years from now. He asked me, "is that before of after our vacation?" Our vacation is next week. He was so releived when I explained to him how far away 7 years is.
After the appointment I took Steven to Chilli's, he got to order anything he wanted. He got chips and cheese dip for appatizer, ribs and fries for lunch and a chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for desert. And....he didn't even get in trouble for not eating his lunch!!!!! He did eat his desert though!
When we got home I took these pictures of him looking out the window showing me his band aid. That spot of stuff on his face is a bit of bbq sauce from the ribs!!
